Mine is a 1998 Shadow VT 1100 C. I discovered the easiest way to access the fuel filter was to remove the exhaust, both side panels, and unbolt the cover behind the rear cylinder. Approach it from the right hand side, and will be able to see the filter at the bottom of the frame in front of the rear tire.

The specs say the fuel tank capacity is 3.7 gallons. The reserve is .87 gallons. That leaves 2.83 gallons available before you have to hit the reserve. I assume that the 3.7 gallons is when the tank is filled to the top.
