This seems to be a reasonable size for most F-100s, and provides large power gains.The ranger based vehicles were all available with the 4.0, so everything is a direct swap and replacement parts are at the auto parts. Biggest issue would be the instrument panel, as the explorer cluster is a different shape than the ranger, so it won't be a direct swap and the pin-outs may be different, .Open up the new engine to see if it's even worth using (piston ring bearings, oil pump). Check for wear on the bottom end. Get a new thermostat ($5) and water pump ($50). Open up the engine, take out all the old gaskets, clean any residue off that the gaskets left. The 2.9 and 3.0, like like the 4.0, were only available with EFI so it would take some doing to swap one in. Swapping in a carbed 302/5.0 isn't too difficult, but there are quite a few things to consider. Motor mounts...there are several available, from about 45 bucks up to almost 200. I made my own.
