I just run him as a ranged, since you can guarantee advantage and sneak attack. And as a trickster ofc, so he has things like sleep and magic missile. Most of the dmg for a Rogue comes from sneak attack anyhow and that's easier to hit with a bow. Advantage in melee is just way harder to get in most fights, because many eyes can see you.
