Fraternities and sororities, while relatively low participation, provide most if not all of the social life on campus. That said, the administration is openly hostile to greek organizations. Bates campus is a bit compact while Kenyons is more expansive. After spending a weekend at Kenyon my son felt more comfortable with his decision to choose Bates. They are both excellent schools so you can't go wrong really. I love the college confidential community, because everyone is thoughtful and helpful.Kenyon for a quieter kid certainly works, and the school has a strong academic culture and reputation well beyond theater, literature and the Kenyon Review. Anecdotally, it sounds like Kenyon and Oberlin awards are more typically in the $10-20k range and don’t go much beyond that. Wooster’ merit awards are up to $30K now with competitive awards up to $32K (top 5%, 1380+ SAT). Kenyon students are pretty demanding when it comes to culture, and I think most of the time the college pulls it through. I actually have a lot of friends who go to urban schools (mostly in NYC and Boston) that regret going there-- they get so caught up in the city that they lose the college's culture.
