Holley recommends the No. 1 position for idle speeds below 900 rpm and suggests moving to the No. 2 position for engines that idle above 900 to 1,000 rpm. The Holley 4-barrel carburetor is one of the most famous pieces of speed equipment ever built. With an unbroken production run spanning more than six decades, this iconic design stretches through the vast majority of hot rodding’s entire history. It’s a legacy that includes all facets of custom cars, racing, and rodding.Step 2. Adjust the fuel level by setting the float first. The ideal fuel level is when the fuel can be seen at the bottom of the sight hole. Start the engine for a minute and shut it off again. To set the floats on a Holley, use the 5/8-inch wrench to hold the nut on the top of each float bowl, and loosen the lock screw on top of the bolt.
Once you have set the float level and idle mixture; the last step is adjusting your idle speed. Many carburetors have a transfer slot that aids the carburetor in its transition to wide open. If the throttle plate position is too far up (and into the transition slot) your idle quality will be low and the car might stumble at the starting line.Step Five: Secondary Throttle Opening. One of the most overlooked carburetor issues has to do with the secondary throttle opening. If the secondary throttle opens to soon, the engine is more likely to bog.
