I'm looking for the best powder choice for the 45-70 with 400-405 grain bullets. Will be loading in the 35-40000 PSI range. The 2 that appear the most promising are H322 and H4198 or IMR4198. I had read someplace that one was better for the heavy bullets and the other was better for lighter - 300gr. Not sure how it will work in 45/70 but found BD works well in 30/40 and 30/06 using max load of UNIQUE as a starting load, and starting load of 2400 as max. Use 1.5 to 2.0 grains of poly fill to hold the powder against the primer. get it at a Wal Mart or a fabric shop. i have found it helps very much.Approximately 1 teaspoon of onion powder is equivalent to 1/3 of an onion. No wad either; the powder does not seem to be very position sensitive. Velocities and pressures are close to factory as is recoil - 40 grains of IMR3031 will kick a lot harder for little velocity gain. (If you open some brands of factory .45-70 they appear to be loaded with only 15-20 grains of flake or ball powder.There are many Marlin M1895, H&R and Ruger single shots, etc. being unneccesarily under loaded due to this lack of understanding. 45-70 brass can easily be shot at 50K psi in an action designed for that pressure. The only handgun powder listed in loaddata.com was 2400 in an 1873 Trapdoor. I use Unique in my 45 Colt handloads. A lot of people post on the internet using Unique for this round, but I wouldn't. If it was safe, the data would be in the manuals.

I don't use anything else. However, in the Huntsman,I use two fifty gr. Triple Seven pellets under a sabot with a 250 gr. XTP, and I can regulate the .45-70 to hit the same POI as the Huntsman. That cuts out a little second guessing.The long range load for my C Sharps 45-70 is 27 grains of 5744 under a Lyman 457125 which weighs 525 in 20/1. My mold has been lapped to drop at .459". My Sharps likes boolits seated to touch the lands (2.95" LOA). 25-28 grains of 5744 should get you in the 1200-1300fps range. Just have to find the node for your rifle.
