As the message flashed the car lost power and the check engine light came on. I was able to get to the berm, turned the car off and restarted.

This is telling you at the hybrid batteries have failed and will need to be replaced in the vehicle to fix this issue. It is a design flaw and unfortunately it is not covered under warranty or extended warranty anymore.
