The noise COULD be the teeth grinding. If they theeth are grinding then the IWE will need to be replaced. Unfortunately, the vacuum system should be checked for proper operation before replacing any parts. Also, you do not need to be in 4x4 with the solenoid disconnected.

When put into 4wd auto or 4wd high the grinding noise gets way louder and more noticeable. My guess was the something with the iwe system. I brought it to the dealership twice. Thumping noise is there. Notice it more when outside temp is below 30. Also noise is louder when engaging the 4x4 vs keeping it in 2wd. Noise is coming from the front end. Truck just broke 3,000 miles. Dealer has no idea.
