The test will shut off when it has determined that the taker has passed or failed regardless of how many more questions are given within a 95% confidence level. People who pass at 75 will pass at every number up until the maximum of 265. People who fail at 75 will fail regardless of whether they answer 76 questions or all 265.

The woman working at the test center told me that having the test shut off after 75 questions was a good thing and that I need not worry. Her words did not help.On the NCLEX, you need to answer enough questions correctly that the computer knows you are MINIMALLY COMPETENT to be a safe nurse. Don’t go into the NCLEX thinking that you’re only going to get 75 questions (for the NCLEX-RN) or 85 questions (for the NCLEX-PN). If you do that, it’s going to stress you out to the max if it doesn’t shut off at those numbers, and you’re going to think that you’ve failed. After I got my email, I waited 4 hours.
