There is no difference in the food quality - the menus are similar. I enjoyed my meals at both resorts. We don't go to Secrets Cap Cana till next year so I can't really help with comparisons but we have stayed at Secrets Playa Mujeres & I have to say although we had an enjoyable holiday we weren't exactly blown away. In my opinion to justify paying for Preferred there should be a seperate Preferred pool which there isn't at SMP.
